      John Beale(e)

      John Beale was born in 1786 in Essex, England. He was tried at the Surrey Assizes, convicted on 27 July 1812 and sentenced to life. He was transported to the colony on the FORTUNE which left England In December 1812 and arrived at Port Jackson in June 1813.

      John BEAL alias DIXON alias HAMBLIN
      Guilty of burglary in Church of St Olave, bourough of Southwark. Sentenced to be hanged by the neck until he be dead.
      REPRIEVED - transported beyond the seas for the rest of his natural life.
      Indictment
      The jurors of our Lord the King upon their oath present that John BEAL late of the parish of ST Olave within the Borough of Southwark in the county of Surrey labourer.
      On the 28th day of March in the 52nd year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George III of Great Britain and Ireland with force and arms at the parish aforesaid in the Count aforesaid then & there Burglarously with force & arms with intent to steal two prayer books value fifteen shillings and sixpence the goods & chattels of James GATTEY & one other prayer book value two shillings & sixpence the goods and chattels of John Hough JACKSON in the church of the said parish against the peace and dignity of our Lord the King.
      Witness James GATTEY, Henry DEMPSTER, Thomas STAFFORD, John Hough Jackson, John PEARCE, & John ROSCOE.
      Jury say Guilty. To be hanged by the neck until he is dead. REPRIEVED".

      He later married Rosetta (Rose) Johnston(e) who was the mother of Catherine, the first wife of Nicholas McCann, son of Peter McCann who arrived in the colony as a convict on the MINERVA in 1800.

      John Beal's occupation was shown on the Ship's Indent as that of a Merchant Clerk and hence he was literate, His physical details show him as being 5ft 11ins tall with a fair complexion, brown hair and grey eyes. he is listed as 27 years old on the Indent.
      Following his arrival in the colony John Beale was initially employed as a stockman.

      John Beale had an interesting life in the colony and more will be added at a later date.
      Following the death of his wife , Rosetta in 1845, John Beale went to Geelong where he died 5 years later. The McCann family of Geelong has advised that he worked as a clerk during the construction of the Geelong gaol and that he was a "fine man". He was buried in the Wesleyan Section of the Eastern Cemetery, Geelong on the 25 September 1850.
